So, what is it about money? Money itself is neither positive nor negative. It is a method of exchange, pure and simple. But our relationship with something so inanimate can get complicated, emotional and so, so … human.

Why do we allow something that only holds the value we agree it should hold to have so much control over our lives?

Because we need money to function in today’s world. Beyond the basics, money allows us to do the things we want to do, experience the places we want to visit, and make a difference where we want to make a difference.

Throughout my career as a financial planner, I have met thousands of people at all different points along their financial journeys. What I have learned is that the people experiencing the greatest sense of financial well-being are often not the ones who make the most money, have the most things, or take the most exotic vacations.

They are often the people who have put money in its proper place — a “you work for me” sort of place. Money becomes a servant to the person or family, rather than their master. When money is put to work thoughtfully and consistently, it can help turn goals into reality.

On the other hand, an avoidant, anxious, or volatile relationship with money can stall progress and keep us stuck in survival mode. It can lead to unnecessary debt and financial decisions driven more by fear than by purpose.

Make Your Money Work for You

The good news? This is fixable.

It is possible to take back authorship of our lives and our finances — choosing purpose over circumstance, action over fear, and significance over survival. I call this Choosing Forward™.

Choosing Forward is simply the decision to stop merely surviving life and start intentionally creating a life that matters. And putting money in its proper place is a great place to start.

The hardest part is actually making the decision. When we REALLY CHOOSE, we are telling ourselves we are ready to take action.

The best part? It ain’t rocket science.

You do not have to have everything figured out before you begin. You do not have to fix your entire financial life in a weekend. You need a place to start, some clarity, and a willingness to take the next step.

The Financial FORWARD Framework™

I created the Financial FORWARD Framework™ as a simple way to help people do just that. It is designed to establish a strong financial foundation where money serves you, rather than dictates your life.

That foundation is not the destination. It is the platform that gives you the freedom and confidence to build a meaningful life.

There is no judgment here. No shame over the past. And definitely no fear. The goal is to take small, practical steps that can change the direction of your financial life.

F — Face Your Financial Reality

Know where you stand.

Get honest about the numbers: What do you earn? What do you spend? What do you own? What do you owe? What benefits, support, or taxes affect your situation?

Facing reality is not about judging where you are. It is about gaining the clarity you need to decide where you want to go.

O — Organize Your Cash Flow

Give your money direction.

Look at what comes in and what goes out. Does your spending reflect what matters most to you? Are dollars disappearing without much thought?

Organizing cash flow is about giving your money a job instead of wondering where it went.

R — Reduce & Manage Debt Strategically

Understand your debt and decide what needs attention first.

Debt is not all the same. High-interest consumer debt, such as credit card balances carried month to month, can quickly become an obstacle to financial progress. Other debt, such as a manageable mortgage, can be a useful part of a long-term financial plan.

The key is intentionality. Understand your interest rates, balances, cash flow, and goals, then create a strategy so debt supports your financial direction rather than controls your choices.

W — Weatherproof With a Safety Net

Build protection for the unexpected.

Life has a funny way of reminding us that we cannot predict everything. An emergency fund, appropriate insurance, having an education, and other safeguards can help keep an unexpected event from becoming a financial crisis.

A safety net is not about expecting something bad to happen. It is about being prepared if something bad does happen.

A — Allocate for Growth

Begin thinking beyond survival.

Once your foundation is becoming stable, it is time to look beyond simply getting by and start thinking about what you can build over time. Saving and investing consistently can help your money grow and may include tools such as employer retirement plans or IRAs, depending on your circumstances.

The specific account matters less than the shift in thinking: from “How do I get through this?” to “What could I build if I consistently put my money to work?”

R — Reduce Taxes Intentionally

Make smarter tax decisions as your financial life changes.

Taxes are part of life, but they do not have to be an afterthought. There may be opportunities involving retirement accounts, investments, income, charitable giving, and other strategies.

The goal is not to avoid taxes at all costs. It is to understand the rules and make intentional choices.

D — Design Your Future & Legacy

Decide what you are building.

What do you want your money to make possible? A comfortable retirement? More time with family? Travel? Helping your children? Supporting causes you care about? Leaving a legacy? Your financial plan should ultimately serve something bigger than a number on a statement.

On the Right Path

Choosing Forward does not mean life will suddenly become easy or every financial problem will disappear. It means we stop allowing fear, uncertainty, or past mistakes to make every decision for us.

Money is a tool. It can protect what matters, create opportunities, and help us live a life of significance. The goal is not to become controlled by money, but to put it in its proper place — working for us instead of the other way around. You do not have to know exactly where your road leads. You just have to be willing to take the next step.

Face it. Organize it. Manage it. Protect it. Grow it. Use it wisely. Then decide what you want it to make possible.

That is what it means to Choose Forward™.
